If you're even thinking about getting an electric car this year, you might want to think about installing an EV Charger now. With the BC Hydro top up on the provincial government rebate, you can get up to $700 off the purchase of an eligible charger and its installation, but you have to act fast. The deadline of March 31st, 2020 is approaching, so call Barr Electric at 250-339-5700 now for more information or to schedule a free estimate.
Things to remember about installing an EV Charger:
All EV Charger installations require a pre-visit to the home in order to complete a load calculation on your current electrical usage. This is a new requirement by Canadian Electrical Code to ensure you have the power needed to supply your charger and the room on your electrical panel for a minimum 40amp breaker. So think ahead, as this will have to be done in advance of your installation. Load calculations are charge-able work, so consider this when you are looking at your budget. They usually take 2 to 3 hours to complete depending on the size of your home.
The closer the charger is to your panel the cheaper your installation will be. It goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway, the further the distance from your panel the charger is the more costly the installation, since labour and materials will cost more.
Chargers will last longer when installed inside a structure to keep them dry. Most people install them in their garage next to their electrical panel. The charging cords are usually quite long to enable charging at a bit of a distance.
There are several chargers available, but there are only certain brands that are eligible for the BC Hydro top-up and BC government rebate. See the list here.
We like the Canadian-made Flo chargers because of their sturdy construction, 100% aluminum casing and 25-ft industrial grade cable that always stays flexible. Flo Chargers are also certified to withstand frequent use and charge your EV even in extreme weather conditions, from -40°C to 50°C (-40°F to 122°F). Flo Chargers shown below are also available right here in the Comox Valley.
There are two types of chargers for the home, Level II chargers are 30amp chargers which will charge your vehicle in about 5 to 6 hours. Level III, 40 to 50 amp chargers are faster, but are more expensive, so the average homeowner is typically more than happy with the Level II since you just plug in your car in the evening and it's ready to roll in the morning.
You can supply your own eligible charger or we can supply it for you. Either way, we will be happy to serve you.
